about

Vonu means turtle in Fijian. We holidayed in Fiji with our young family in 2017 and these beautiful Nannies sang a local traditional song on a rainy day outside our hut. I recorded them on my iPhone, and used it in this piece. I pitch shifted a few things and added a few syllables to make a coherent music line over what I had already created. I wanted to play guitar on this tune, so I did! There’s a pretty ripping solo throughout the climax which was a heaps of fun!

I guess there’s a holiday feel and a “take me away somewhere special” vibe here. I wanted it to be gritty but beautiful, tough but caring. The main guitar riff is actually a beloved vintage baritone guitar and the synth is my Korg 700 (a very rare 50 year old synthesiser).
