about

This became the title piece for my EP as I felt it was the closest to what I set out to achieve. It’s chill and positive, the two things that were missing from my mind during the Melbourne Covid surge/lockdown.

I wanted GSG to take me back to the early Noughties where I met Nina (now my wife). Days when responsibility was next to nil, parties aplenty and hangovers consisted of slurping down cheap Pho’ on Victoria Street. Nina has a few vocal lines, “You’re so spunky… Kind of groovy… And delicious... So much fun…” We did have “so much fun”, and still do especially recording the vocal on this. My studio is at home, so when the munchkins are asleep, Nina and I can get in there and get creative.

GSG has all the elements I’m into, slightly sung funk beat, sparse yet groovy bass guitar (even a slight bass ad-lib solo), acoustic guitar, washy synthy bits, degraded effects to conjure some nostalgia and psychedelic vocals.

I loved making the clip to GSG. I asked friends and family to send any footage from past family holidays, but nothing after 1980. There’s lush Brazilian rainforest and waterfalls, Tasmania bushland, Queensland beaches and my parents wedding. The images just slotted in perfectly with the music and I really didn’t need to do much.
